Chocolate Spider Halloween Donuts

You can’t have Spiderweb Donuts without the spiders! So tonight I made Double Chocolate Spider Donuts! And they hang! Spider Donuts // 13 Nights of Donuts // Legal Miss SunshineDid you know it’s National Chocolate Day? No? Me neither. But it is! So it’s a great coincidence that I made these double chocolate donuts with a chocolate glaze! Plus, aren’t they just so cute? Googly eyes on anything just makes it better! Spider Donuts // 13 Nights of Donuts // Legal Miss SunshineSpider Donuts // 13 Nights of Donuts // Legal Miss SunshineOk, so my spiders are anatomically correct when it comes to the legs (there’s 8 of them), but they just looked weird and not so cute with eight eyes, so I just went with the two. Sorry. I think they’re on the lookout for spider killers! Spider Donuts // 13 Nights of Donuts // Legal Miss SunshineAnd you can totally make these yourself! I’ve got the recipe right here with some tips because, I’m not gonna lie, it was not so easy to figure out those legs. Spider Donuts // 13 Nights of Donuts // Legal Miss SunshineSpider Donuts // 13 Nights of Donuts // Legal Miss Sunshine

Double Chocolate Spider Donuts
Ingredients
  • Donuts:
  • 2 cups flour, sifted
  • ½ cocoa powder
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 6 Tbsp milk chocolate chips
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Glaze:
  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 5 tsp milk
  • Decorations:
  • Black Red Vines
  • Candy eyes
  • String/Twine for hanging donuts (optional)
Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350 F and measure your ingredients.
  2. Start by melting your butter in a saucepan over medium low heat. Then add your chocolate chips and stir. Once melted, remove from heat and add in your sugar and eggs, making sure to stir immediately so you don't get scrambled eggs. Then add your buttermilk and vanilla and stir until mixed.
  3. Combine your dry ingredients in your mixer's bowl and add your liquid chocolate mixture to it and stir on low for 2 minutes until all flour is mixed in.
  4. Then fill a zip lock bag with the chocolate batter, snip off one corner, and use the bag as a pastry bag to fill your greased donut pan wells.
  5. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until done.
  6. When your donuts are done, let them sit in the donut pans for 5 minutes and then remove them to a cooling rack.
  7. While the donuts are cooling, make your chocolate glaze by combining all your ingredients in your mixer and mix together on low for 1-2 minutes.
  8. if you're going to hang your donuts, wrap some twine around each one and knot it.
  9. When ready, glaze your donuts and immediately add the eyeballs so they stick.
  10. Then slice your black red vine in half length-wise using a paring knife, then cut each stick into thirds.
  11. Stick your eight legs into each spider.
  12. Hang and enjoy!

Spider Donuts // 13 Nights of Donuts // Legal Miss SunshineI tried using pull apart Twizzlers for the legs, and then settled on black Red Vines sliced in half length-wise and then cut into thirds. I do like how the texture of the Red Vines gives the legs some creepiness! You can also use pretzel sticks dipped in chocolate, but they will be much more rigid and uniform. And I love how the entire donut is edible! Now, just need to find some edible string! Spider Donuts // 13 Nights of Donuts // Legal Miss SunshineSpider Donuts // 13 Nights of Donuts // Legal Miss Sunshine
