August can sometimes feel like the worst month, am I right? It’s a limbo month for me. July has the 4th of July, backyard bbqs, summer vacations, etc. and September has Labor Day, the beginning of fall, apple picking, and planning Halloween. August though? August has no big holidays or celebrations for my family and therefore not a ton to look forward to! So I’m starting a new August tradition to give myself something in August to get excited about! Every year I’m going to randomly celebrate a day in August just to remind myself that August really isn’t as bad as I think it is and celebrate all that August has to offer. This year, I decided to celebrate by ordering a cake from the grocery store bakery and decorating it as a DIY Rainbow Rock Candy Bakery Cake Hack! Last year for my baby shower, my mom and my mother-in-law ordered a two-tier “gender reveal” cake. The cake cost $40 and it was delicious. Boutique bakeries wanted to charge us $200 or more, but we got this perfect cake for only $40 … and it was from the grocery store bakery! My friend Wendy was so inspired by it that she ordered a $40 grocery store bakery cake for her wedding! And nobody at her wedding even knew it was from the grocery store!DIY Rainbow Rock Candy Bakery Cake Hack // Salty Canary

And now that I’ve become a mom, this little trick is going to be my go-to birthday party hack: order a grocery store bakery cake and decorate it with my little touches so it looks even more homemade. It saves so much precious time, I know it will taste great, and I get to be creative and put my own little personal touch on it. Really, the best birthday cake is the one you don’t have to make! So for my August celebration, I ordered a simple white cake from Von’s, my local grocery store bakery. It’s white cake with vanilla Whipped Icing! I asked for “Whipped Icing” because it is creamier, smoother, and has less sugar than traditional buttercream icing with the perfect amount of sweetness that doesn’t leave a greasy, gritty taste in your mouth. Plus,  Whipped Icing is available in 13 different flavors! There’s the traditional flavors of Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Lemon, Cream Cheese, etc., but there’s also S’mores, Sea Salt Caramel, and Pumpkin Spice which all sound perfect for a fall season cake!DIY Rainbow Rock Candy Bakery Cake Hack // Salty Canary

If you order an undecorated cake to decorate at home, be ready to confirm that you’re sure you don’t want anything on it. I ordered mine over the phone (since I had ordered one in-person before and knew they could do it) and I was asked if I was sure I didn’t want to come into the store to look at pictures, if I didn’t want something written on the cake, etc. (which you could totally do if you want!). But I simply told the Von’s bakery clerk that I was sure I wanted a plain cake with vanilla Whipped Icing and just a simple line around the base and where the two tiers meet.DIY Rainbow Rock Candy Bakery Cake Hack // Salty Canary

And then I purchased some rock candy in pink, orange, yellow, and turquoise. You can find rock candy online or at a local party store. I set aside a few pieces as a cake topper and then used the back of an ice cream scoop to break the rock candy off the sticks which I then separated into different colored bowls. I then applied the different colored pieces around the cake on the edges. It took me about 20 minutes total to do this. I started on what I decided was the “back” of the cake and figured out my technique there so that by the time I got around to the front, I was an old pro.DIY Rainbow Rock Candy Bakery Cake Hack // Salty CanaryDIY Rainbow Rock Candy Bakery Cake Hack // Salty CanaryHow cute and colorful is this cake? But it needed a cake topper!  DIY Rainbow Rock Candy Bakery Cake Hack // Salty Canary

So I took 5 sticks of rock candy that I had set aside and pushed them in on top of the cake. DIY Rainbow Rock Candy Bakery Cake Hack // Salty CanaryDIY Rainbow Rock Candy Bakery Cake Hack // Salty CanaryAnd the cake was delicious! It was fun to randomly have cake just because! Since we had the twins, we haven’t really been able to celebrate birthdays and holidays like we used to, so a random midweek cake pick-me-up was just what we needed! Remember to ask for “Whipped” the next time you order a cake or cupcakes at your grocery bakery counter! They’ll know exactly what you mean! If you want some other sweet treat options, the grocery bakery also offers delicious cookies, donut holes, cupcakes and more. DIY Rainbow Rock Candy Bakery Cake Hack // Salty CanaryWhat about you?
