Do you have any family traditions? My husband and I go to the County Fair every year. We love it! The fried food, the games, the b-level (ok, d-level) singers and bands. Oh, and the racing pigs! Since we’ve been dating, we only missed the LA County Fair one year, and it was because we were on our honeymoon, although we did make it to a County Fair in North Carolina that summer, so I guess the tradition is unbroken.Usually, we try to go to the LA County Fair on Ralphs Food Can Fridays. If you donate 5 canned goods, then you receive free admission for that day. This years Food Can Fridays are September 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th from 12pm-3pm ONLY. We try to purchase our 5 cans each from a Ralphs supermarket in order to support the sponsor.
And this year, the LA County Fair is also doing a couple of other drives:
They are offering a School Supply Drive on Thursdays from 12pm-3pm. If you donate at least 5 new or unwrapped school supplies, you will receive free admission for that day. The school supplies will be donated to Inland Empire United Way’s School Tools Programs and local community schools.
And there will also be Blood Drives. Click here for more details on how to give blood and receive free admission.
And of course there are other ways to save on admission, click here to find out more.
Once we’re in, we make a beeline for some fried food. There’s always something new that the vendors are willing to deep fry. We’ve tried deep fried Kool-Aid, deep-fried Oreos, deep fried cookie dough, and a deep fried Klondike Bar. (For the record, the cookie dough and Klondike Bar were the best.) This year, I’m looking forward to trying a deep fried Twinkie. What I will NOT be trying is a Krispy Kreme Triple Decker cheeseburger. That might be the first cheeseburger I won’t eat. After that, we usually play some games. I dominate the Roll-A-Ball. The only time I lose if if I get too nervous. Last year, the Mister won a Pac Man Pinky ghost playing … balloons? It’s not darts, because they don’t give you darts anymore, instead they give you bean bags. We’ve been trying the Ring Toss for years, just giving them our money in the hopes of winning a huge minion or unicorn. We’ve even looked up tips and pointers but can’t seem to win. Someday … someday that huge minion will be mine.Next we maybe go on a few rides. I love the giant slide and the ferris wheel. Maybe this year I will brave the swings. After law school it’s hard to get on some of these fair rides which look like they might kill you.And then we will eat some more!Sometimes we take silly photo booth photos. I can’t pass up a real film photo booth. And then we will eat some more. Do you notice the pattern? We usually check out the animals, I love to look at the pigs. Which then leads us to the pig racing. And then at night, we hit the concert. Here’s a tip, I hope it’s still valid: If you enter the fair and then go to ticket booth for the concert and ask if they have any free tickets left, they will give you free tickets to that night’s concert, but they are in the side sections, meaning bad/obstructed view. You can still see, but it isn’t straight on. And you can still hear it! What concert would you go to this year? I’m leaning towards Cheap Trick & Kansas or Heart. But I’m also leaning towards LL Cool J and Salt-n-Pepa or Earth, Wind & Fire. Click here to see the full concert series.
