I know it’s a bit too early for Christmas, I mean Thanksgiving isn’t even here yet, but why not get a jump start, right? I’ve got a cute and simple DIY project to create with your Cricut Explore™! How darling is this little vintage-inspired Christmas Light Garland? And what’s great is you can use the design in SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS! As a garland on your mantel or bar cart, to decorate a Christmas gift, or as an invitation to your holiday party!Cricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineCricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineCricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineBefore we dive into the projects, let’s chat for a hot minute about the Cricut Explore™.  In case this is your first time on my blog, I have to ask, did you know that with the Cricut Explore™, you can upload YOUR OWN DESIGNS! So cool right? And, the Cricut Explore™ can cut so many different types of materials including paper, card stock, felt, fabric, metal, and wood! Check out the Cricut Explore Cut List here. So no more endless cut outs with scissors or exacto knives!

Ok, so let’s get started making some quick and easy Christmas DIYS. Let’s start with the large Merry and Bright Christmas Light Garland. You’re going to need a few materials:Cricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss Sunshine

Materials Needed:

 Optional Materials:

  • Extra sheets of card stock (in case of any mistakes)
  • Large Pom Poms
  • Small Pom Poms

Instructions: I designed my Christmas Light in Photoshop, exported it to Illustrator, and made an SVG file, meaning it is a vectorized file and you can make it as big or as small as you want.

Step 1: In Cricut Design Space, simply start a new project, then click “Upload Image”, click “Vector Upload”, browse and choose your downloaded Christmas Light Bulb file, and click “Save Image”.  The Christmas Light Bulb will then be at the bottom of your screen, click on it, giving it a green checkmark, and click “Insert Images.” Only use the bulb to start with, we will work with the light cap in Step 5, but you might want to upload both and play with the sizing and then delete the cap.

Step 2: Remember how I said these are SVG files? Well, you can make the Christmas Light any size you would like. So go ahead and scale the light bulb to the size you want it to be. If you’re making the garland as shown, I sized the bulb to 3.29″ x 4.76″.Cricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss Sunshine

Step 3: Click the green GO button, and then decide how many light bulbs you want to cut. Where it asks “How many projects do you want to make”, enter the amount of lights you want, and the software automatically lays out all of your lights for you. Then follow the instructions to load the mat and then let the Cricut do all your cutting!Cricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss Sunshine

Step 4: Once the Cricut is done, remove the mat from the machine and repeat Step 3 for each of the different colors you would like. I made 6 pinks, 3 turquoise, 3 dark blue, and 3 wood prints.

Step 5: Now let’s cut out the glittered metal caps. In Cricut Design Space, simply start a new project, then click “Upload Image”, click “Vector Upload”, browse and choose your downloaded Christmas Light Top, and click “Save Image”.  The Christmas Light Top will then be at the bottom of your screen, click on it, giving it a green checkmark, and click “Insert Images.”

Step 6:  Scale the light bulb cap to the size you want it to be. If you’re making the garland, I sized the top to 3.23″ x 1.9″.

Step 7: Click the green GO button, and then decide how many light bulb caps you want to cut. Where it asks “How many projects do you want to make, enter the amount of light caps you want, and the software automatically lays out all of your lights for you. Then follow the instructions to load the mat and then let the Cricut do all your cutting!

Step 8: Once the Cricut is done, remove the mat from the machine and remove the light caps from the mat.

Step 9: Next, tape the glittered caps and the colored bulbs together.

Step 10: Then lay out the lights reverse side facing up and unwind the baker’s twine over them, giving yourself enough room at the ends for hanging, and tape the twine to the back of the lights, then cut the twine from the roll.

Step 11: Hang and enjoy!Cricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineCricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineCricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss Sunshine

Next, let’s get started on the Christmas Light Party Invitation! I would be so excited to get this invite in the mail!Cricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineYou’re going to need the same materials, but here they are again:

Materials Needed:

 Optional Materials:

  • Extra sheets of 12″x12″ card stock and glitter card stock (in case of any mistakes)
  • Small Pom Poms

Instructions: The instructions for the invitation are nearly the same as the garland, but with some minor changes, but I’m going to list them all out below. I designed my Christmas Light in Photoshop, exported it to Illustrator, and made an SVG file, meaning it is a vectorized file and you can make it as big or as small as you want.

Step 1: In Cricut Design Space, simply start a new project, then click “Upload Image”, click “Vector Upload”, browse and choose your downloaded Christmas Light Bulb file, and click “Save Image”.  The Christmas Light Bulb will then be at the bottom of your screen, click on it, giving it a green checkmark, and click “Insert Images.” Only use the bulb to start with, we will work with the light cap in Step 5.

Step 2: Remember how I said these are SVG files? Well, you can make the Christmas Light any size you would like. So go ahead and scale the light bulb to the size you want it to be. If you’re making the invitation as shown, I sized the bulb to 1.67″ x 2.4″. Copy and paste the bulb 6 times, flip them horizontally, then you’re going to add some text. I used the font Diderot and added text to 6 different bulbs and “attached” the text to each bulb (so when the Cricut cuts and writes, it know which bulb it is writing on. I added the following text:

  • You Are Invited
  • To:
  • Date:
  • Time:
  • Place:
  • RSVP:

You can have the Cricut fill in all of your text, just make sure it fits and is readable.

Step 3: Click the green GO button, and follow the instructions to load the mat and then let the Cricut do all the cutting and printing.

Step 4: Once the Cricut is done, remove the mat from the machine and repeat Step 2 and 3, minus the text, for each of the different colors you would like. I went ahead and filled up 1 entire sheet of dark blue, turquoise, pink, and a few whites.

Step 5: Now let’s cut out the glittered metal caps. In Cricut Design Space, simply start a new project, then click “Upload Image”, click “Vector Upload”, browse and choose your downloaded Christmas Light Cap, and click “Save Image”.  The Christmas Light Cap will then be at the bottom of your screen, click on it, giving it a green checkmark, and click “Insert Images.”

Step 6:  Scale the light bulb cap to the size you want it to be. If you’re making this invitation, I sized the cap to 1.49″ x .88″.

Step 7: Click the green GO button, and then decide how many light bulb caps you want to cut. Where it asks “How many projects do you want to make, enter the amount of light caps you want, and the software automatically lays out all of your light cap for you. Then follow the instructions to load the mat and then let the Cricut do all your cutting! I filled up one entire sheet of glitter card stock and make around 76 caps.Cricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineStep 8: Once the Cricut is done, remove the mat from the machine and remove the light caps from the mat.

Optional: Add some small pom poms between the light bulbs or to the ends or stick a few in the envelope to add to the party!

What’s great is that your guests can use this invitation to decorate an area of their house! It’s an invitation and decoration all in one!Cricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineCricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineCricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineCricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineYou can also use the same instructions for the invitations, minus the text, to make a mini garland, perfect for decorating the Christmas Tree (please be careful if also using Christmas lights), or to decorate Christmas gifts.Cricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss SunshineCricut Vintage Christmas Light DIY Garland - Legal Miss Sunshine
