Just a short drive south of the Las Vegas Strip, Seven Magic Mountains stands as one of Nevada’s most colorful and photographed attractions. Rising from the desert floor in brilliant shades of pink, yellow, green, blue, orange, and red, these towering stacks of boulders create a striking contrast against the rugged Mojave Desert landscape.

Whether you are looking for a quick roadside stop, a unique art experience, or the perfect photo opportunity, Seven Magic Mountains is well worth adding to your Las Vegas itinerary.

The Backstory of Seven Magic Mountains
Seven Magic Mountains is a large-scale public art installation created by internationally acclaimed Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone. The artwork consists of seven towers made from massive limestone boulders that have been painted in bright neon colors and stacked vertically, reaching heights of more than 30 feet.

The installation opened in 2016 (of course, I mean it gives PEAK 2016 vibes and is a perfect Instagram photo) as a temporary exhibit intended to remain in place for just two years. However, its immense popularity with visitors and locals led to several extensions, allowing the artwork to remain a “permanent” fixture in the Nevada desert.

The brightly painted stones symbolize the intersection between the natural and artificial worlds. The colorful towers stand between the bustling energy of Las Vegas and the vast open landscape of the Mojave Desert, creating a visual conversation between nature, humanity, and creativity.

About the Artist
Ugo Rondinone is one of the most recognized contemporary artists working today. Born in Switzerland and based in New York, Rondinone is known for creating large-scale installations that explore themes of nature, time, and human emotion.

His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, but Seven Magic Mountains has become one of his most accessible and beloved creations. The installation allows visitors to experience contemporary art outside traditional museum walls and in a setting that feels both unexpected and memorable.

Admission
One of the best things about Seven Magic Mountains is that admission is completely free.
Parking
A free parking lot is available near the installation. From the parking area, visitors follow a short gravel path to reach the artwork.

Hours
The installation is open year-round and accessible during daylight hours. Since it is located outdoors in the desert, visiting during daylight provides the best experience and photography opportunities.

Tips for Visiting
Arrive Early or Late
Seven Magic Mountains is one of the most popular attractions near Las Vegas, and crowds can gather quickly. Early morning and late afternoon visits typically provide fewer people and softer lighting for photos.

Bring Water
Even though the walk from the parking lot is short, desert temperatures can become extremely hot, especially during summer. Carry water and stay hydrated.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
The pathway consists of gravel and uneven desert terrain. Comfortable walking shoes will make the visit more enjoyable. I was fine in my woven, backless flats, but I definitely watched my step so I wouldn’t get any broken glass or rocks in my shoes.

While Seven Magic Mountains is easy to access and generally very safe, remember that it is located in the Mojave Desert. Wildlife including rattlesnakes, lizards, and desert rabbits may occasionally be seen in the area. Stay on designated paths, wear sturdy shoes, and be aware of your surroundings while exploring. Most visitors never encounter a snake, but it is always wise to respect the desert environment.
The only snake you may encounter is the one you can take a photograph with while its wrapped around your neck ala Britney Spears (in the lower left corner of the photo below).

Check the Weather
Summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Spring, fall, and winter generally provide the most comfortable conditions for exploring.

Be Respectful of the Artwork
Visitors should not climb on the boulders or damage the installation. Staying on designated pathways helps preserve the artwork and surrounding desert environment.

Bring a Camera
The colorful towers look dramatically different throughout the day as lighting changes. Sunrise and sunset often provide the most stunning photographs.

If you plan to photograph Seven Magic Mountains, keep in mind that personal photography is welcome, but commercial photography and filming require prior permission. Professional photo shoots, advertising campaigns, product photography, and other commercial uses of images taken at the installation are not permitted without authorization.
Visitors taking casual vacation photos and social media pictures for personal use can enjoy photographing the artwork freely while respecting the site and other guests.

Land Acknowledgement
Salty Canary wants to acknowledge that we live, operate, gather, and benefit every day on the traditional stolen lands of several Indigenous peoples and nations including the Tongva (Gabrieleno), Kizh (Gabrieleno), Chumash, Popeloutchom (Amah Mutsun), Ohlone, Awaswas, and Fernandeño Tataviam peoples who have stewarded the lands and waterways throughout their many generations in what is now the state of California. I wanted to personally acknowledge these Indigenous people and nations and both their commitment and current contributions to the land with a donation to the American Indian College Fund because acknowledgment without action does not begin to address the systemic issues facing Indigenous people. If you feel as though you benefit from the land you’re living on or traveling to and you have the means, I kindly ask that you donate to a Native-led organization such as the Native American Rights Fund or the American Indian College Fund.
