The Flower Fields in Carlsbad, CA
While Mother Nature isn’t entirely responsible for the Flower Fields in Carlsbad, it doesn’t mean they aren’t worth it! Every spring, the rolling hills of Carlsbad transform into perfectly planted stripes of ranunculus flowers, creating one of the most colorful sights in California. Rows of pinks, reds, yellows, purples, and whites stretch toward the horizon, looking more like a painting than real life. It’s cheerful, orderly, and incredibly satisfying to look at.
Walking through the fields feels calm and joyful at the same time. You can stroll the paths, take a tractor ride, or simply stand and admire the view while bees hum happily around you. The colors shift as the sun moves, making every visit feel a little different.
The Flower Fields are only open for a short season (usually March through early May), which makes them feel extra special. If you love bright, happy places that feel like pure springtime, this one is a must.

California Poppy Reserve in The Antelope Valley, CA
When the orange California poppies bloom, California shows off its wild side. Hillsides and valleys suddenly glow bright orange, often after a rainy winter, turning ordinary landscapes into jaw-dropping scenes. The sight of poppies dancing in the breeze feels both peaceful and powerful.
Unlike formal flower gardens, poppy fields feel wonderfully untamed. You might stumble upon them along Highway 1, in Antelope Valley, or scattered across open hills and trails. There’s something magical about not knowing exactly where you’ll find them each year.
The color is bold but simple – just endless orange against blue skies and green hills. It’s a reminder that some of California’s most beautiful moments happen naturally, without fences or tickets.

Capitola Village in Capitola, CA
Capitola is small, but it packs a huge punch of color. The brightly painted homes lining Capitola Beach look like a rainbow spilled onto the sand. Soft blues, sunny yellows, coral pinks, and mint greens create a cheerful backdrop to the ocean waves.
The village itself feels cozy and welcoming, with colorful shops, cafés, and seaside restaurants tucked into narrow streets. Everything feels relaxed and walkable, encouraging you to slow down and enjoy the view. Capitola’s colors feel warm and friendly rather than flashy. It’s the kind of place where you can sit on the beach, watch the sunset reflect off pastel buildings, and feel instantly happier.
As you wander through this quaint area, you’ll also find plenty of delicious places to eat. The hardest part may be deciding which one to choose! (My suggestion: Gayle’s Bakery & Rotisserie, but I’m biased because I worked there in college!)

Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA
The Madonna Inn doesn’t just use color – it celebrates it. Famous for its bright pink exterior and wildly themed interiors, this San Luis Obispo landmark is unforgettable. Every room, hallway, and dining space feels intentionally over-the-top.
Inside, you’ll find bold patterns, vibrant carpets, stained glass, and unexpected design choices around every corner. It features 110 rooms, but no two rooms are the same, and each one feels like stepping into a different fantasy world. It’s one of my bucket list goals to stay in each one!
The Madonna Inn proves that color doesn’t have to be subtle to be beautiful. It’s joyful, quirky, and unapologetically itself – exactly why people fall in love with it.

Palm Springs
A self-guided Palm Springs Door Tour is something you can do all your own via car or bicycle. Riding through this neighborhood, you’ll see cheery-colored front doors. There’s the famed Pink Door and the Party Lions, plus beautiful garage doors and much more. The link I posted has a printable map to help lead the way!

One thing to know before you go is that you have to remember these are private homes and as such, you should only enjoy the beauty from the street. Please don’t get up on someone’s property and for those that have posted signs stating, “No Photography,” take note and simply admire with your eyes.

This pretty place is full of bright colors from the headboards on your bed to the technicolor walls of the hotel itself. It’s perfect for those Insta-worthy shots to make everyone envious of your travels.

Salvation Mountain in Calipatria, CA
Leonard Knight created the vision known as Salvation Mountain. This hillside retreat in the desert can be found in Imperial County. What’s impressive is that it is fashioned from an array of things that most of us would call “junk.” There are old tires, windows, car parts, bricks, and tons of paints in every color.
Together, it became a number of murals with Bible verses. Religious or not, you will find a beautiful hushed awe in this place which was declared a national treasure by the Folk Art Society of America.
This spot is powerful because it’s handmade and imperfect. The color here tells a story – one of creativity, faith, and human expression.

Oceanside
Oceanside blends classic beach colors with a growing arts scene. Blues and sandy neutrals mix with colorful murals, surfboards, and seaside architecture. The pier adds structure and contrast to the natural palette.
The Oceanside Civic Center adds a bold, colorful architectural look, while old vintage theater signs and neons around town bring in pops of color and old-school charm.

Painted Ladies & Colorful Houses of San Francisco
The Painted Ladies are one of San Francisco’s most iconic sights. These Victorian homes, painted in soft pastels, line up beautifully against the green lawn of Alamo Square with the city skyline behind them.
The colors feel elegant and historic rather than flashy. Soft blues, creams, pinks, and yellows highlight the architectural details and give each house its own personality.
Seeing the Painted Ladies reminds you that color doesn’t need to be modern or bold to be impactful. Sometimes, timeless charm is the most colorful thing of all.
And on the rare clear day, the nearby Golden Gate Bridge shows up in all its orange glory.

As you can see from this list of the 11 most colorful places in California, you’ll be able to have some fantastic backdrops for your travel photos. California is such a unique place of beauty, one that embraces every hue of the rainbow, and that’s why I love to call it home.

Land Acknowledgement
Salty Canary wants to acknowledge that we live, operate, gather, and benefit every day on the traditional stolen lands of several Indigenous peoples and nations including the Tongva (Gabrieleno), Kizh (Gabrieleno), Chumash, Popeloutchom (Amah Mutsun), Ohlone, Awaswas, and Fernandeño Tataviam peoples who have stewarded the lands and waterways throughout their many generations in what is now the state of California.
I wanted to personally acknowledge these Indigenous people and nations and both their commitment and current contributions to the land with a donation to the American Indian College Fund because acknowledgment without action does not begin to address the systemic issues facing Indigenous people. If you feel as though you benefit from the land you’re living on or traveling to and you have the means, I kindly ask that you donate to a Native-led organization such as the Native American Rights Fund or the American Indian College Fund.
